Home dulche Home... (11 Dec)

After 6,5 weeks of adventuring in Bolivia:zorro: , of which 3 weeks working at an animal refuge:turtle: :spider: :bee: , it was time to head back home to Holland. A strange idea, since I feel quite at ease:-) in this faraway country called Bolivia, but it would be great to see my family and friends again:hugging: . Just one last Bolivian hurdle to conquer: Arriving at the airport of Santa Cruz at 7.00:-| Lees verder...

Braceface (beugelbekkie) (4 Dec)

Hoihoi,
Hier nog even een berichtje vanuit de jungle, op mijn laatste dag hier. Morgen vertrek ik met de bus naar Santa Cruz, waar ik morgenmiddag rond 6uur hoop aan te komen.
Gisteren was mijn laatste werkdag. Alles ging wonderbaarlijk goed. Alle apen hadden het prima naar hun zin, het weer was erg prettig om in te werken...
Yesterday was my last day in the jungle, which means picturetime! I won´t be able to put them on the net straight away, but I hope to get some good ones on it shortly.
The day before yesterday was my last day of work. The weather was perfect, and the monkeys were very playful. A good day at the monkey mirador, the name of my area. In the afternoon the monkey called Tano (the alphamale who bite my fingers to shreds earlier) attacked another monkey of his own group.. It was crazy Martin, the most twisted monkey of them all, and impossible to handle except for 2 people who work here in the park. That was quite a bit of excitement there, because how can you treat a monkeyhand that is slashed open from left to right, when that same monkey is completely unreliable and no-one dares to come near him? It took a bit of time and 3 people to accoplish that one (I was smart enough NOT to get to close). Lees verder...

El mono y el mano - The monkey and the hand (28 Nov)

Unexpected, there is a possibility to use internet here in the Junglevillage of Villa Tunari. It´s all very slow, but that is not to much of a problem for me now.. Why? Because at this moment, I have only one hand I can use...
Before I come to that part, I will just try to describe the place and the work. With 20 to 40 volunteers, 3 vets and some locals who work here, we keep up an entire animal park. There are touristwalks up to waterfalls and viewingpoints, and, best of all… ANIMALS! There´s an Avery for the birds, many wild animals in the trees and an area full of monkeys. Wild monkeys from the area and monkeys the refuge saved from homes, circuses and the black market.

A tour through the Amazone Pampas near Rurrenabaque (16 Nov)

Travelling is a strange phenomena. Just when you think you've seen everything, something new comes around the corner and let you stand in awe:shock: . It happened many times in the 'pampas'; the more open and swampy area close to the tropical rainforest.

"The world's most dangerous road" and some travellers-aid (9 Nov)

G'day everyone!:cheer:
Because of some travellers luck, I'm able to write something pretty soon after my last update.:typing:
What happened? Last week in Potosi, I met a French couple who where working in La Paz. I was more than welcome to visit them. I got the address and well, since I AM in La Paz now.. I decided to ring their doorbell and see what would happen:whistle: . The result is that I now have my own bedroom in a HUGE appartment:mad: (I got lost once, and this morning I found out they don't have 2, but 3 toilets ;-) ). I have an amazing view over the city, because we are on the highest level of the building:shakeit: . I also have internetconnection! The only downside I found so far, is that the keyboard is in French...:holland: ;-) Lees verder...

The wonders of the Saltlake (6 Nov)

In my last episode, I was very much impressed by the work the miners in Potosi did. I am still impressed, but not by the miners this time. It is the landscape that was almost literally breathtaking..

Beforehand my apologies, but I cannot seem to be able to upload my pictures overhere.. Maybe it is lucky for you, since I made more than 250 in the last 3 days... I try to describe what I have seen..

Greetings from the highest city in the world (1 Nov)

Here I am in Potosí.. The highest city in the world. Many new adventures came on my way, while getting here. I have had many talks with people from around here. Potosí is a city with a very sad history. A lot of the silver from the Spanish Silverfleet came from this country. Actually, this used to be one of the richest cities in the world, together with Sevilla and London. Now, all you can see of that splendour are some of the kolonial buildings...

But the once so rich silvermountain is still in use for getting minerals. Yesterday, I visited one of the 300 mines still operating in that mountain. It was spectaculair and unbelievable at the same time. How people can work here for 10, 12, 15 or 20 hours a day, I cannot imagine. It is heavy work, and very dangerous as well. Because of all the dust, definitely, you won´t make it easely to your pension...

Arrival in Sucre (29 Okt)

First of all: Thanks for the reactions on the blog. I enjoyed very much reading it. I am not able to return many reactions (internet is cheap here, but it simply is so slow, that only typing gives the poor computer problems).  But please, let me know a bit about you once in a while, and know that I am reading you! Sorry for the lack of smiles in this text, but the computer is just to slow to be able to add them. I also have problems uploading some pictures the normal way, but you can see some at: http://emiel.tolsma.net/index.php?album=Emiel+in+Bolivia%2FSucre&dispsize=640&start=0   (make sure you copy the whole line. I will try to add them the normal way as well).

Now for the story: I did it!!

Being flexible is not an option, it is a MUST

first of all, if you click ´pictures from bolivia´ on the right side, underneath ´links´ you get to my photoalbum with the different days.

You can plan your travel as good as possible, there will always be something that is going to throw your plans upside down. With me, this happend on the 2nd day in Bolivia.. My plan: I will take a nightbus from Santa Cruz to Trinidad; a city 9 hours north of Santa Cruz. In the most chaotic and huge busstation I have ever seen, I managed to buy a ticked. Hey, I even got quite a good price for the whole trip. YES, travelling through Bolivia will begin.. Well, not exactly. Yesterdayevening I arrived at the station with my bags, after an adventerous bus-trip from the city-center (every bustrip here is an adventure.. I cannot hardly describe it.. It´s as chaotic and organized as an ant-pile.. It looks like every ant (bus) is going crazy, but in the end it turns out all works very effecient.

I arrived in Bolivia (and so did my bag)

Soy en Bolivia!
In other words: I have made it; I am in Bolivia! The trip started with one hour delay from Amsterdam Airport.. Well done dutchies.. I was lucky I had plenty of time with the transfer at Miami, so it didn´t give me any problems (Just more time to drink something with my friend Marleen who was there to wave me a good trip).
They made me fill in nummerous forms in the plane, and once in America, I got scanned, double checked, put into machines, double checked again, examined my shoes but they could not find anything, so they let me through. If only they checked in my handluggage, they would have found ´pepernoten´; a special dutch treat for this time of the year.. But they didn´t so I can enjoy them, together with some Norwegean chocolate :-D Lees verder...

There is a 'first' and 'last' for everything (24 Okt)

It is strange:-? , but when a big travel is coming up, you start to realize everything you do:(() .. I have just had my last shower:bathing: at my own place. I slept for the last time in a bed I can actually fit in:sleeping: ! (the average Bolivian is no taller than 1.65-1.70:-s ). I will see my parents for the last time within an hour:-| ..
This week was one of many goodbye's:hugging: . I won't be gone for such a long time, but for some reason, it does feel like it. My Grandparents treated me on a BIG gourmet-meal on Thursday:hungry: , which was awesome:-D ! But it is strange to know I won't see them for the coming 7 weeks:-( .. The same goes for my uncle, aunt and nephew, who visited us after the diner. Lees verder...

Let me start with: BIENVENIDOS!:cheer:

Since I got angry reactions(6) that some of my English-speaking friends felt 'left out':'-( because they could not follow this site, I thought it might be nice to add a bit international flavour here:holland: .. (OK, the real reason is, that it is impossible for me to keep a Dutch AND an English log:mad: , so I will combine it on one site:-) ). Please check in regularly:typing: , since there will be a lot of adventures coming on shortly!:fishing: :washing: :ironing: ... ;-)

De wondere wereld van logica... (11 Okt)

Helaas, dat is nu toch even anders gegaan:-( ...
